Thinky-Thoughts about an Upcoming Movie
Mar. 7th, 2010 10:17 amLast night I went to see Alice in Wonderland in 3D. I will probably talk about that in a later post. Right now I'm here to talk about one of the previews I witnessed last night.
So, the first preview that caught my attention was The Karate Kid. I put aside my preconceptions about this remake of one of my childhood favorites and watched. The remake stars Jaden Smith in the 'Daniel-san' role of Dre Parker and Jackie Chan in the 'Miyagi-san' role of Mr. Han. According to what we're shown, Dre and his mother move to, not just a new town, but a new country (China) for reasons that aren't entirely clear, but I'm sure they're pretty good. Dre meets a pretty girl, has issues with the local boys who then proceed to beat him up. He then meets the wise Mr. Han who teaches him the ways of martial arts, yadda... yadda... yadda...
We all know the story. If you don't, go rent the first Karate kid.
While watching this, a couple of things really came across to me here. The first, it appears that Smith and Chan really have a chemistry here. I think that I might actually like this one when it comes out. The second thing that came across was my realization that while I'm going to like the movie, I hate the title. Now don't get me wrong here. I think I'm going to like the movie. I like the story, and really don't mind that they're remaking it. The title of the movie is 'The Karate Kid'. Karate. There it is.
Smith's character is in CHINA! He's learning from JACKIE FREAKIN' CHAN! Is he learning KARATE??? NO! He's learning (say it with me) KUNG FU! This movie would be perfectly fine with me if it were named The Kung Fu Kid, but it's not. So there you have my entire complaint about this upcoming movie. Take it for what you think it's worth.

What a Surprise
May. 10th, 2009 02:25 amI went out to the movies today. Since I'm in Seattle and it was such short notice to get anyone to go with me, I thought I'd go alone. So, I went to see Star Trek.
I bought my ticket, got some popcorn and a diet soda, found a nice quiet seat and settled in. Through all the pre-movie screen stuff and the previews, the seat next to me reamained empty. Just as the movie started, I realized I had company. Mom was sitting next to me*.
Honestly, this seems only natural to me. She was the one who introduced me to Star Trek in the first place. Whenever the old episodes with Kirk and Spock were on, we'd curl up on the couch and watch. She took me to my first Star Trek convention (that's another story and if you want to hear it, ask me sometime).
When the first of the Star Trek movies was released, we went and stood in line in the bitter cold to see it opening weekend. I enjoyed it for the special effects and such, but didn't get the same impact from the movie that she did. She explained to me that it was very emotional, seeing the Enterprise on the big screen for the first time. I thought it was just cool.
After seeing the new movie, and getting a little emotional to seeing the Enterprise again, for the first time, she poked me and said, "See!!! That's the feeling! That's what I meant about that first movie." And I understood. I could hear her laughing and thuroughly enjoying the movie. She was one of the original fans, and she accepts the new Star Trek, and I do too.
I had a really good time with her today. I really miss her.
* For those new to me, my mother passed away almost nine years ago. She was a very special lady. If you want to know just how special, don't ask me - ask my friends or anyone else who knew her. I'm biased. They're not.
