Autumn has fallen upon us all at once, and Seattle is shrouded in grey skies and pouring rain; it’s so dark and gloomy out sometimes, that it starts taking on the feel of a film noire movie. So let me set the stage for today’s photo: A small, dimly lit club, people chatting, drinks being poured, plates and silverware tinkling. A band takes the stage and from the back corner the bassist plunks out a note that causes the patrons and staff to halt their conversations in anticipation of the evenings entertainment. And the band plays on…

I hope you all have a great holiday!

Inky's Birthday by tanuki_green

Inky’s Birthday, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

As fire week concludes, I can honestly say that it’s been a pretty amazing week. We have the Facebook page for Tanuki Photography up and running! Thanks to everyone who came by and gave it a ‘Like’. And if you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for?

In addition, I’m proud to announce that A Rising Tide will be distributing two of my prints in large sized format! Head on over. Check them out. And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, but would like a large print of one of my other pieces, drop me a note and I’ll see what I can work out as far as making it available!

Hope you all have had as fantastic a week as I’ve had!

Fire. There's something in the back of our lizard brain that tells us to be afraid of it. It can be devastating. It can destroy without any malice at all. Most of us know enough to use it as a tool and otherwise leave it well enough alone.

But there are others. You know the ones. The ones who are drawn to fire, to understand it, to tame it. These people know full well the pain fire can cause, but they also know its beauty.

This week is fire week. Welcome and enjoy the beauty.

ECCC - 2012 by tanuki_green

ECCC - 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

“Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth.” For some that’s true. For others it’s the rodeo, a convention, a party, a bookstore…we all have our “happy place” and some of us take longer to find it than others. But isn’t that what life’s about? Finding that place or that thing that makes us happy and then enjoying it to the fullest?

What is my happy place you ask? My happy place is that moment of capturing an image of someone else in their happy place. Being able to capture the emotion of those happy moments is something incredibly special.

So…what makes you happy?

Feast of St. Crispy 2012 by tanuki_green
Feast of St. Crispy 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

Recently someone asked me what kind of photography I most prefer to do and I had to think about it. What I decided is that I love seeing, and capturing, people doing what it is they love doing. Bearing witness to that passion, taking an image of it, and sharing it with the world is what makes me happiest.

If I had to narrow it to one genre of photography, though, I’d have to say I love photographing musicians and concerts. I feel fortunate to be able to attend many different sorts of concerts, large and small. Having a good seat can mean the difference between a great photo and just another concert, and I would love to have better access to the stage to take the sorts of shots I see I my head. Here is one example of a photo where my love for music, photographing people doing what they are passionate about, and a good vantage point all collide.

WorldCon 2012 by tanuki_green
WorldCon 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

So WorldCon has come and gone. I’ve finally gotten around to processing and posting the few pictures I did actually take. For me, this year was more about building relationships and helping take care of those around me. And I had a blast doing so.

I’m looking forward to a few more conventions like this one.

Oh! And I saw this guy around the convention a few times. I think is room was on the same floor in the hotel as mine.

Happy Monday everyone. Seems I’m a little behind on posting here, I was travelling on Friday and managed to not get anything queued up for the weekend. I hope y’all didn’t miss it too much.

Today’s photo is from one of the concerts at WesterCon this year. This is Betsy. She plays the cello like nobody’s business. She is really a joy to listen to not to mention being photogenic.

So, enjoy the smiles and if you get the chance to hear her play, DO SO!

Project Stark by tanuki_green

Welcome to Fandom Friday! We wrap up the celebration of fandom with Dmitri. He takes fandom to the next level.

Dmitri is a creator and an artists. He has a love of fandom such that he is working to make a living at it. You can find him in the vendor halls at many a convention in the Pacific Northwest. He does some amazing leatherwork — he’ll even do some custom leatherwork for your costuming needs. He also sells his wares online at Tormented Artifacts.

Dmitri is a man that makes fun his business. Sometimes it’s a frustrating business. But sometimes he gets the chance to do something for himself, and that’s what you see here. This is from Project Stark – the Steampunk Iron Man he’s putting together.

Westercon 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

Like I mentioned Monday, this week is fandom week. It’s a look at how we all rejoice in the celebration fandom in our own various ways. Some people have a favorite character that they like to dress up as casually. Other people are a bit more serious about the matter of having fun.

This is Torrey. She celebrates her fandom by creating costumes from scratch from some of her favorite shows/movies and then competing at masquerade balls at various conventions throughout the year. And she’s no slouch either. She’s won several awards for the hard work she puts into her costumes.

So, here’s to Torrey and all the other people for with fun is some awesomely serious work.
