Okay - so about a week and a half ago I was eating pizza. I had to go to the bathroom for a brief respite and as I eat in the living room, I placed my plate on my laptop keyboard, pushed the table away from the couch (a reasonable distance in my mind) and went to take care of things. When I returned, I noticed that my pizza was gone. AND the garlic butter that was also on my plate had been tipped over. After taking back the slice of pizza from the dog, I went about cleaning as much of the buttery mess as I could.

Things were working okay for a while, although, every now and then a new puddle of the garlic-smelling fluid would appear on the table oozing out from under the laptop. Gradually, though, certain keys on the keyboard stopped working or would only work intermittently. Now, I know what you're thinking. Why doesn't he just call the manufacturer and get the thing fixed under warranty? Well, as it turns out, garlic butter damage is not covered under said warranty. I did not have much time to do anything about this particular problem in the time leading up to Faerieworlds.

While at said wonderful amazing event that I will chronicle later, I managed to take over 600 pictures. I did manage to get them all moved to my laptop on Sunday after getting home.

Monday was a wonderful day of rest, per se. I went to work and then home. I took care of the critters and there was not much in the way of computer interaction. Tuesday was work, dinner with [livejournal.com profile] copperwise, [livejournal.com profile] s00j and [livejournal.com profile] omnisti. It was wonderful to get to spend some one on one time with them. I know how rare that is and I do treasure it. Then it was home and exercise time (exercise = 2 hrs. Rock Band 2 drumming) and then bed. Yesterday was work then home and exercise (same thing here). Then I wanted to do some work on my laptop. I tried. I started getting frustrated with my keyboard. People I was chatting with didn't say anything about the typos, but I could hear them thinking, "What's wrong with him?"

I tried to give up and go to bed, but had a bit of trouble sleeping (even though I still have not recovered from the weekend). So, I got up and went to my laptop. With great frustration, I navigated Google and found a page that explained how to take my laptop apart. The idea was this: I have an old laptop with no hard drives and a dead video card laying around. Why not switch the keyboards. I read along with the instructions as I pulled the keyboard out of the old laptop. It turned out to be a fairly easy process. Once that was done, I set the old one aside and powered down my good laptop. I began to take it apart and realized that I was going to need a whole LOT of paper towels to clean this mess.

I pulled the battery out and there was butter. Battery cleaned. I pulled the main hard drive - no butter. I pulled the second drive and there was some butter, which was then cleaned. I pulled the DVD drive out. Jackpot! Mother load of butter. How was my DVD drive still working? I don't know, but it was. I went about the process of cleaning that up and moved on. I pulled the screws that held the top bezel in place and carefully removed the bezel. Oddly, a lot of dust here, but no butter. I removed the screws and the keyboard and found the remaining garlic butter (which was now starting to smell faintly metallic) under the keyboard, right on top of the DVD drive housing. The bottom of the keyboard was slick and had that same garlic metallic smell. After reviewing all of my options the keyboard was unceremoniously tossed in the trash.

After a fairly comprehensive cleaning, the "new" keyboard was installed, and the machine reassembled. I crossed my fingers as I powered it back on and was pleased to find the "new" keyboard in working order. I also checked to make sure the DVD player was still working after being sauteed for a week. Lo and behold it did (if it didn't, I did have a back up plan).

So! Having taken care of all that, I can begin to process my photos from Faerieworlds tonight!!! Once that's done, I'll post my thoughts. I know you are all waiting with bated breath for my words.

You are waiting, aren't you?

While I'm waiting to get home and start processing photos from Faerieworlds, I've started blogging about video games (and specifically my memories about them) over at GamerDNA. I've only just started, but there's something that really resonates with me about doing this.

Check out my latest post. There will be more.
