Moonlight by tanuki_green
Moonlight, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

Here in the Pacific Northwest we have well earned reputation for bad weather and grey skies. We often hear about amazing astronomical things like eclipses, auroras, and meteor showers but because we’re all too often shrouded in layers of thick, grey clouds, we rarely have the opportunity to see what Nature is showing off.

Back in 2008 I heard there would be a full lunar eclipse in the month of February–one of those dark, grey months. I was certain it would be another cloudy night where I’d miss out on one of those rare and beautiful events that I have heard so many people speak of with awe and wonder; when it turned out to be a clear, cloudless night I jumped at the opportunity to break into a new category of photography and try my hand at night shots of the moon. Armed with my Canon PowerShot S3IS in one hand and a tripod in the other I set up and took some nice, long exposure shots.

This one is of the moon nearing its full eclipse.

One of the lessons I took away from this night is to take every opportunity as it is presented. To be honest, that wasn’t the first time I’d learnt that lesson, but that time it stuck and it’s one I keep close to the heart these days.

Memorial Day Weekend 2012 by tanuki_green
Memorial Day Weekend 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

The sun is starting to fade in these parts. The weather is changing. The rains are coming. It’s fall and there’s a wonder to this time of the year.

But before we welcome in the joys that the coming season brings us, let’s say one last goodbye to the bright sunshine, warm days and all that we’ve just been through. Lets celebrate peeking through the trees to find the sun, warming us with its steady gaze.

Goodbye, Summer. It was a good one this year. Hello, Fall! I welcome you with anticipation of wonderful things to come.

Every now and then I feel like the odd man out, like an odd duck. I realize I’m different than a lot of people. On the other hand, I don’t subscribe to a standard definition of ‘normal’.

I have some problems with the term ‘normal’. The first is that it is supposed to be a term for what is generally accepted by the population as acceptable. Since this is an ever-changing idea, the definition changes. Secondly, it represents what is average about society.

I don’t want to be average. I want to be extraordinary. I have my talents. They are different talents from many people. And they are mine. Just like the crow here is different, he (and I) can soar amazingly high!

More Moon Experiments by tanuki_green
More Moon Experiments, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

The sun is shining in a cloudless sky, the vast blueness betrayed only by the fact that today is a crisp 58 degrees. The beauty and perfection of this day cannot be denied and yet all I want is to find myself comfortably ensconced in my bed, a citizen of dreamland.

Sadly, though, there are hours more to work and much to be done. So instead of sleep I have this; the night, the trees, and the moon in her quiet tranquility. I really enjoy shooting at night; things become soft and still, the world slows down and I am left alone to my own devices–a thief capturing quiet moments of perfection with my camera.

Memorial Day Weekend 2012 by tanuki_green
Memorial Day Weekend 2012, a photo by tanuki_green on Flickr.

Who needs a peaceful Friday? I think we all do. Everyone I know is hustling and bustling all over the place. Everyone is on the go-go-go! It’s do or die! It’s on to the next big thing! Now! Now! Now!

Okay. Now, stop. Breathe. Listen to the wind. Look at the clouds, the grass. Turn off the laptop, the TV and the phone for a couple of hours. It’s the first days of Fall. The craziness is about to start up again soon. But right now, clear your mind and be at peace.

At least, I imagine that’s what these pieces of grass are telling me. I really ought to listen.
